I had an experience this week that reminded me of how far our nation has gotten off track. Kind of a heavy topic, I know, but it’s a true story and this nation needs the kind of help only its citizens can provide. We need a Renaissance of Kindness
I won’t go into deep details about my experience, but I met a woman carrying out a service task in my community who was filled with great fear. How do I know this? Because she took over the top precautions that made it clear she was protecting herself as she carried out her job. It couldn’t be more obvious.
As I realized why she was behaving in such an odd way, I realized a greater truth. America needs a Renaissance. A Renaissance of Kindness. And the change in heart and attitude it brings reflects itself in actions- the words we use and how we treat others.
A Renaissance of Kindness is a cultural embrace of a new way of interacting and relating to one another. It means we choose to relate to one another with mutual respect, civility and courtesy. It’s a kind of rebirth- the awareness we live in a society, not in isolation.
Maybe kind words are an old way of thinking that was lost and needs to be recovered, I don’t know. Or perhaps we’ve never known it, I’m not sure. Either way, we need change and it will only come as we see the need for it.
And this perspective must come from the people. That’s you and me folks. It’s the only way to deal with what I ran into this week. It is a fresh wind blowing winds of patience and tolerance. America needs this and it needs it now.
I’m ready to do my part. Are you willing to do yours?
