From time to time I create material relevant to my current vocation, which is Technical Training. I had a thought the other day about the standard for the Technical Trainer and as I thought about it, this picture came to mind. So I created a visual to make it crystal clear.
The standard for Technical Trainers is excellence.
We should pursuit excellence at what we do as trainers. Excellence means we dedicate ourselves to do our absolute best at all times. As we go through the paces of training others, we should always strive for superiority and push ourselves to always get better. This is our ambition, our goal, our Holy Grail and it’s what will make us ultimately succeed as a Trainer.
As I considered the standard of excellence, the thought came to my mind, “This sounds pretty simple, but how do we get there? What allows us to reach this standard?” And as I thought about it, a couple of trainer behaviors came to mind. If we follow these basic trainer areas of expertise, we will meet the standard of excellence every time. If we aggressively practice and develop these behaviors, the outcome will be excellence.
It’s a matter of simple math. If we develop these areas we are guaranteed success. It’s gonna happen. Here’s my math formula for excellence. Are you ready?
Communication Skills + Technical Skills = Excellence.
If we apply ourselves to being excellent communicators with our customers, and add technical knowledge to the equation, we will reach excellence, as sure as 1 + 1 = 2. Trainers must foster the ability to communicate and advance their knowledge as an ongoing professional development strategy.
It’s simple really, but it’s also a work in progress for us as Trainers. Communication ability and technical knowledge skills should be running in the background as we train and developing when we are not training. Our professional habit should be to expand these areas on an ongoing basis. And as we do so, we will succeed.
So get out there and meet the standard! You got this!
Have a great week,
Ernie
